Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (reviewed by Sarah)

In the novel, Wuthering Heights, there is a vast amount of action, drama and confusing romances. Emily Bronte entertained herself by writing, and one can most definitely tell that she did so by reading this novel of twisting and turning events. The novel starts off introducing the narrator, Lockwood. He is an awkward character and does not make many appearances in the novel. The character of Nelly Dean, is the primary source of speaking throughout the story. The landlord in which Lockwood is renting a manor, is named Heathcliff. Heathcliff appears harsh and cold to Lockwood, but the reader can see that there may be more behind the reasoning of his cruel behavior; or so one would wish to think… As Lockwood moves in, he decided to meet his landlord and spend time learning of the history of the residents living at the old Wuthering Heights manor. Returning back to the manor Thrushcross Grove, in which Lockwood is renting, he is increasingly curious to Nelly Dean, a servant, as to the true history of Wuthering Heights. Nelly sits him down and chats with him for a great while about the romance between Heathcliff and Catherine, the troubles they faced, and the romances involved in between the messy love. Lockwood grew increasingly interested and begged old Nelly to repeat all of the history up to the modern day. The relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff was troubled and rocky from the start. Catherine’s brother, Hindley didn’t take liking of their newly adopted brother, Heathcliff. From that point on Catherine’s ideas about love were flawed and misleading, as she fell in love with another young man, named Edgar Linton. The Linton’s nursed Catherine back to heath after an accident, and as a result Catherine spent and increasingly large amount of time with their son, Edgar. Thus started another of the many romances. The complications of love and marriage only grew into a tangled vine that seemed never ending… until a certain death influenced a heartbreak.

There was never a dull moment in this novel. The soap-opera-like book was packed with love and hate as well as life and death. Overall, Wuthering Heights is a novel worth spending time on. The story is that of an interesting romance and how love can never truly die. In my opinion, I have learned from this novel to never doubt your heart, or love simply for an unrealistic and meaningless quality.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (Reviewed by Brooke)

The setting of this book took place at a school. Melinda Sordino is the main character of this story. The main character, Melinda, is someone that anyone can relate to going through the same experiences. Melinda was taken advantage of by a boy named Andy Evans. After all this happened Melinda fell into a deep depression and felt like she had no one there for her or to talk to. This situation made it hard for Melinda to trust people in her life. Her parents weren’t really there for her and she was often ignored. In order to express her emotions she used art and befriending the new girl Heather. I could relate to this book in many ways. Dealing with depression and feeling like no one will ever be there for you. By reading this book it has impacted me by seeing that someone could be going through such a horrible thing and you wouldn’t even know. My opinion on this book is that it is very interesting and made me want to keep on reading. Therefore I recommend this book for students to read.

Outbound

Outbound is a book that talks about the history of space missions and how rockets developed over time. A few important people in the book are Friedrich Tsander and Sergei Korolyov who in 1933 developed the first liquid propelled rocket for the USSR.  In 1961 Alan Shhepard become the first American in space. Then in 1962 John Glenn became the first American in orbit. Those are a few important people who have helped space research continue and grow throughout history. This book gave me some useful information about how technology has grown over the years and NASA scientists made predictions when they might start certain space projects. The bad part about this book is that it was published about 20 years ago. So it does not have recent space missions or projects. I would recommend this book for people who are interested in science and for people who want to become a scientist  like astronomers.

Twilight Saga Eclipse

the setting was in Forks, Washington. its a rainy and not much sun in their environment. most of the action takes place in Seattle. the main characters are Edward, Rosalie, Emit, Alice, Jasper Colin. Bella Swan and Jacob Black. The major events are Bella trying to get jacob back as a friend, bella wants edward to change her but he wont, the newborns are born again, vampires&werewolf’s came together to fight them, jacob got crushed,  a certain vampire wants to kill bella, and graduation. i liked how the book wrapped a love story, vampires, & werewolf’s all together. if i could change something in the book i would change bella’s choice in becoming a vampire. i learned that you should do what makes you happy and what is best for you from the book. anybody really should read it. it’s an interesting book. if i was to give the book a rating i would give it a “I couldn’t put it down. it so good!”

Sepulchre by James Herbet (reviewed by Amber)

~The main setting of the book is Neath, a large estate in the english countyside.

~The main characters are Felix Kilne, Liam Halloran, Cora Redmile and Charles Mather.

~The main events of this book are:

1. Halloran kills three IRA members in a ransom deal gone wrong.

2. Achilles’s Shield, the organization that Halloran works for, is hired by the Magma Corpration to protect an important, highly prized employee who’s very existance is a secret, Felix Kline. After Halloran meets both Felix and Cora his organization accpects the contract and Halloran becomes Felix primary body guard.

3. On the way to Neath, Halloran prevents a kidnapping attempt which confirms that Felix was right about sensing that he was in trouble. Once at Neath Halloran notes how exposed the estate is,despite there being a keeper,  but Felix is confident that nothing can harm him at Neath. That night Cora and Halloran begin a physical realtionship that puts Halloran’s sense of priorties into question.

4.One of the three leaders of Achilles’s Shield is kidnapped and his body is found with clear evidence of torture leading Mather and Halloran to speculate as to why and if it is connected to taking Kline as a client.

5. Kline is called back to Magma where is it revealed that there is a traitor in their mists that is telling a rival company about Kline’s visions of natural resource desposits. While Kline points the finger at Cora he later uses his powers to kill the real traitor while Kline is himself far away from Neath.  Mather is called in by the chairman and told of other simlar incidents Mather decides it is time to cancel the contract and heads to Neath.

6. Halloran breaks into the Keeper’s lodge and talks with the dying man who is in reality much more then a guard to Kline. As the Keeper weakens he loses control of the jackals that guard Neath and is killed as Halloran shoots at the jackals as they tear the keeper apart. Barely escaping with his life Halloran returns to the main building and is captured after breaking the neck of one of Kline’s personal body guards . Kline informs Halloran as to how important the Keeper was to him, acting almost as a barrier against the ravages of life for Kline. Now he needs a new keeper…

~When it comes to relating to this book I would have to say I couldn’t relate personally to the characters but I could connect with the fact that Halloran is not a completly good person because no one is 100% good or evil.

~Overall the book was a very good read, it was thrilling, dark, chilling and full of  imagery. The plot is far from predictable with a few good twists yet not so complex that you can’t follow the action. It is one of those books that you are almost sad when it ends because you want more. I definitely recommend this book but to mature readers due to it’s subject matter which includes gore, sex, canniablism, terrorism to name  a few.

The Atlantis Complex is the next book in the Artemis Fowl series. Though Orion seems less destructive than Artemis, his friends cannot stand him, and have to fight to get Artemis back, as well as fight against the enemy which has trapped them.

The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan reviewed by Sawaya

Percy is sent on a new adventure after new demi gods are discovered.  This time the prophecy predicts that two will die as Percy and his fellow heroes travel on their mission. The end of the mission brings them to the equinox and the discovery of which Greek God is the father of the new demi gods.

A wonderful addition to the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series.
